Description: Limoges Cider Pitcher Hand Painted Roses & Grapes Purple Pink JPL Mold 1890-1932 Elegant Decorative Unmarked CIDER PITCHER from JPL (Jean Pouyat) Limoges, France, HAND PAINTED, Beautiful GRAPES & PINK ROSES on WHITE w/GOLD Beaded Handle, circa 1890-1932 DESCRIPTION: This cider pitcher was designed in a very classic pattern with hand painted grapes (both purple & white), and pink cabbage roses with their green leaves, brown stems and tendrils by a talented artist. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The gold trim on the smooth rim is very thick as it is on the embossed, beaded handle. Though this cider pitcher is unmarked, it has 18 raised gold beads on the handle and the exact characteristics of the JPL mold. (We have sold a number of these and recognize them.) The fruits are set on washes that vary in color from purple to green to yellow to blue under the spout. The handle has the usual 18 large embossed beads that are painted gold and on washes that change from dark green to yellow. CONDITION: While this pitcher is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. The gold on the handle shows no wear on the large beads. There is no gold or paint wear. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The pitcher has a diameter of 7 1/2" and a height of 6 1/8" to the top of the spout. The height to the top of the handle is 5 3/4". The measurement from handle to the opposite side is 9". It has a capacity of 10 cups. HISTORY/MARKS: The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French names associated with the porcelain in the Limoges region dating all the way back to the 1700’s. Jean Pouyat began a company in 1842 at Limoges and the business was carried on by his sons after his death in 1849. About 1883, the company became known as La Ceramique. The now famous JPL backstamps were used beginning in 1851. Although this cider pitcher is unmarked, the specific mark that would be on the pitcher is called mark #5 (Mary Frank Gaston in Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1890-1932.
