Description: This is for a rare, limited edition post-war Pierre Soulages hand-signed abstract aquatint, no. 29/85. Beautiful aquatint in color gives an air of a dark brown, on laid paper by one of my favorite French abstractionist. This shows light traces of age and handling; left side has a spot on the passe-partout that is within the frame however the actual piece is intact. Pierre Soulages is considered a major figure of post-war European abstraction, alongside Hans Hartung, Georges Mathieu, Serge Poliakoff, and Jean-Paul Riopelle. He’s particularly renowned for his “Outrenoir” (“beyond black”) series of paintings, which feature matte and glossy black fields interrupted by ridges, scores, and gashes; the artist is interested in how black paint absorbs and reflects light. Since making his gallery debut in 1947, Soulages has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Louvre, and the State Hermitage Museum (he was the first living artist to show at the institution), and his work has been acquired for the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim, Tate Modern, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. At auction, Soulages’s work regularly sells for seven-figure prices. Selling a lot of my home and wardrobe items to be posted throughout the week because I am switching up my style a bit. ☺️ Please review photos. Dimensions: 22 ½ x 30 ½ in. art piece: 29 in.
