Lewisia columbiana is a herbaceous perennial in the Portulacaceae family. A native to the western United States and British Columbia. Some common names include Columbian Lewisia or Columbia Bitter-Root. It grows to about a foot tall from a large edible taproot and caudex. The leaves are succulent basal leaves that are smooth around 4 inches long. The flower inflorescence shoots up to a foot above the base and can have up to 100 flowers on it at one time. The flowers can have 4-11 petals, white to pale pink, with deep pink veining. They prefer to grow in rocky soils on mountain habitats. Full sun to part shade is tolerated. Zones 6-11 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Sow seeds into a well-drained, sandy compost and barely cover seeds so light can still penetrate the seeds. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist. Seeds may germinate slowly.
