Description: "Les Caractères" is a 2 volume, 4"x6.25" leather-bound hardcover set written by Madame de Puisieux (Madeleine d'Arsant de Puisieux) and published between 1750 and 1751 in Paris. No publisher is listed, and London is misleadingly given as the place of publication. Pagination, Vol. I: [4], viii, 252; Vol. II: [4], 169, [1]. An early work by Puisieux, it's a philosophical treatise with an anti-clerical bent influenced (and, some scholars believe, co-authored, at least regarding Vol. I) by French philosopher Denis Diderot, with whom the author was having an affair. Puisieux is primarily known for her early feminist efforts and her 1750 book "La femme n'est pas inférieure à l'homme" ("Woman is Not Inferior to Man"). The set is in good condition. There are cracks forming at the joints, there's loss at the spine ends and to Vol. I's "Tom I" panel, and the boards are exposed at the corners. Vol. II is bumped at the bottom right corner. The hinges are intact. Vol. I has several pencil marks to the second flyleaf while Vol. II has a mark-like smudge to the last flyleaf. Multiple pages in Vol. I are bent or chipped at a corner while in Vol. II several pages at the back have small marginal chips.
