Description: Offered here is a large self-portrait by Leonard Baskin, which is in very good or better condition. The lithograph is done in at least three, possibly more, colors and measures approximately 39 by 51 ½ inches. We’re unsure whether the crinkling is original to the paper or occurred after the printing. There is a piece of the paper missing in the lower right-hand corner and a tiny tear flap on the lens of his glasses, both of which are shown in the accompanying photographs. The edition number “10/50” is penciled under the left corner of the image and “Baskin” under the right-hand corner. We obtained this lithograph along with a number of other Baskin prints and ephemera from the estate of Bill Bishop, an Arizona art and antique dealer who had a long-time friendship with Baskin. Information that accompanied this print indicated that it was a Baskin self-portrait. The portrait appears to have been done later in Baskin’s life and does not appear in The Complete Prints of Leonard Baskin: A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1983 by Alan Fern and Judith O’Sullivan. As a result of a thorough Internet search, we were not able to find another portrait of Baskin wearing glasses, although various photographs show him wearing glasses, at least in his later years. Please review the accompanying photographs carefully as they are the most important part of the description. Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was a nationally and internationally acclaimed sculptor, printmaker, graphic designer and teacher. His work is in a number of museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Vatican Museums, the Smithsonian Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery and many others.
