Description: Offered here is a woodcut, created in 1998, of Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre by Leonard Baskin in excellent condition. Daguerre, an artist and physicist, was the inventor of the daguerreotype process of photography. The heavy high-quality paper sheet measures 13 ½ by 15 inches and the image itself is about 7 ¼ by 10 ⅞ inches. The print does not appear to have been mounted or framed previously. Underneath the left corner of the image, “VII/L” or 7/50 is written in pencil and “Baskin” is written under the bottom right corner. Please review the accompanying photographs carefully as they are the most important part of the description. Over the next several months we will be offering a number of prints by Leonard Baskin, which we obtained from the estate of an art dealer who apparently had a long-time friendship with Baskin. We also have a number of museum catalogs and other ephemera relating to Baskin, including a photograph of Baskin taken in 1998, two years before his death, by the publisher of the Journal of Contemporary Photography, that we will be offering. Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was a nationally and internationally acclaimed sculptor, printmaker, graphic designer and teacher. His work is in a number of museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Vatican Museums, the Smithsonian Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Portrait Gallery and many others.
