Description: Shipping LEON BAKST Costume Design for "St. Sebastian" SIGNED WATERCOLOR Old Woman LEON BAKST (1866-1924) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 12.5 X 10 (Sight) SIGNED AND DATED 1925 UPPER RIGHT A costume design by Leon Bakst for the character of an "old woman" in the ballet "La Nuit Enscorcelee" ("Bewitching Night") based on music by Frederic Chopin, signed by Bakst on the plate and dated 1925 beneath his signature. Mixed Media, mostly water color. Pencil is also noted. Hand-colored with gold gouache highlights. The original tissue guard is also available. This piece is circa 1922-1927. From a collection of theatre designs and drawings by the great Russian artist put together shortly after his death in 1924 by his friends and admirers. Several deluxe editions with hand-colored pochoir plates were published in the mid to late nineteen twenties. The editions were small, having a limitation of around 300 copies. The pochoir technique: made by the artist's hand, using hand-cut stencils and stippled brush and sponge application, pochoir builds up layers of color and texture, giving the artist total control. The paint sits on the surface rather than soaks in as in the case of ink. All pochoirs are unique. This piece is in excellent condition with no defects to report.
