Description: Opuntia ficus indica hybrid 'GTO' eaf pad/nopales plant; this plant pack is 2 to 3 large cactus pads 6-9" tall. Each leaf pad can grow into a large tree producing hundreds of pads a year. The hybrid is a cross between a large fruit/spineless opuntia ficus indica x opuntia JoconostleI called it GTO because the cross was with a cactus my dad likes from Guanajuato. The Mother tree is pictured here and is much larger now. It has grown in Altadena, CA for several years. It has always been cared for and has never gotten treated with any chemicals or fertilizers other then organic mulch. Never used pesticides or insecticides on it. It is edible and tastes much better than many similar opuntia or cacti species. Unlike many cacti it isnt as sour when used in cooking. I use it in various dishes but my favorite is just grilling them because it makes them crunchy Also produces prickly pears. The spines are also easier to peel off for when you want to cook them, since they are large and easy to see. These plants can also be used as landscaping plants as they are drought tolerant & care free species. They only need to be watered once a week for a year then once a month after that unless it rains, then you dont need to water. The plants also have large spines so they can be used as yard/farm/ranch border fencing that can keep out livestock predators, yard scoundrels, and humans. I have seen them grow to be 10-16 tall. This means humans and animals will be severely hurt trying to cross or jump it. They are a fence that never needs to be repaired and is natural, meaning unlike steel or wood, it is sucking out carbon dioxide and serving an infrastructure purpose at the same time. I will include cacti of various sizes to fill the package as full as possible. I ship them in large usps priority mail boxes.
