Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) KILCHURN CASTLE. This fine ruin stands on a promontory jutting into Loch Awe. The site was an old stronghold of the Macgregors, but these were dispossessed by the Campbells, and the present Keep is said to have been built in 1440 by Sir Cohn Campbell founder of the Breadalbanes. An old tradition says it was erected by.his lady, while he himself was absent in a crusade; but as there was no crusade at that time the story is doubtful. The plan is an oblong quadrangle, the other portions being later than the keep, and the Stone Stair bearing the actual date of 1621. The castle was inhabited by the Breadalbane family till I740, and five years later was occupied by Hanoverian troops. Since then it has been roofless, but is now carefully preserved, and is one of the finest baronial ruins in the west of Scotland.
