Katherine was born October 13, 1906 in Detroit, Michigan to Henry and Maggie (Moore) Caldwell. When Katherine was very young, the family moved to Alberta, Canada to take advantage of homesteading opportunities. Katherine and her three brothers, Fletcher, Robert and Raymond, and two sisters, Maggie and Sadie, thrived in the rugged Western Canadian wilderness, enjoying snowshoeing, hunting, chopping wood, horseback riding, playing basketball and running races. Katherine was very proud to have ridden her favorite horse, Stemwinder, to first place finish in the annual community fair. Katherine and Thomas were married for 51 years before his passing. They were members of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Parish where Katherine was active in the Altar Rosary Society.
