Description: Kansas City, MISSOURI - 11th Street: Downtown Kansas City bustled from end to end, but its heart was 11th Street between Main and Grand. Since the turn of the century, these blocks, known as Petticoat Lane, were Kansas City's Fifth Avenue. Often disparaged for its snob appeal - a 1908 Kansas City Times article called it "a strip of asphalt completely surrounded by inducements to spend money" - Petticoat Lane remained a popular destination, with sidewalks so crowded that pedestrians were forced into the streets. Major stores included Emery, Bird, Thayer; Harzfeld's; and Rothschild's, but dozens of smaller specialty shops - such as Hoppe Clothes, the Egyptian Tea Room, and Bon Ton Beauty Service - gave the area its personality. Petticoat Lane proper was but a two-block stretch of downtown, but it lent a fashionable cachet to neighboring businesses, such as Jaccard's Jewelers; Jenkens' Music Co.; the Jones Store Company; and Wolferman's. This Undivided Back Era (1901-07) postcard is in good condition, but shows some edge wear. E. C. Kroff Publisher, Milwaukee. No. 1235.
