Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-CA X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Offered here is the hard to find First American edition of Kai Lung's Golden Hours the vintage fantasy novel by the reclusive English writer Ernest Bramah (1868-1942). His science fiction was compared to the works of H. G. Wells, his detective stories with Conan Doyle's, and his humorous novels with those of Jerome K. Jerome. Bramah was also famed for his traditional tales of Chinese literature. This is the second of the fantasy books featuring the intrepid Chinese character Kai Lung. Kai Lung, an itinerant story-teller of ancient China is brought before the court of the Mandarin Shan Tien on charges of treason by the Mandarin's evil, ambitious confidential agent Ming-shu. In a unique defense, Kai Lung takes on the role of a type of Scheherazade, reciting beguiling tales to the Mandarin, thus successfully postponing his conviction time after time until he is finally set free. In the process he attains the love and hand of the maiden Hwa-Mei. Golden Hours is very similar to Arabian Nights - the stories vary in tone and mood from serious to funny, and sometimes there are stories within stories. Title page reads: Kai Lung’s Golden Hours by Ernest Bramah – With a Preface by Hilaire Belloc – Published by George H. Doran Company, New York , c. 1923 by George H. Doran Company.
