Description: DC COMICS DC Cinematic Universe First Appearance KeySUPERMAN (2025)First Cover Appearance: Maxwell LordFirst Appearance: Ice Maiden (Ice, Tora Olafsdotter) The notorious, shrewd and deceptively powerful businessman MAXWELL LORD, instrumental in the founding of the post-Crisis On Infinite Earths JUSTICE LEAGUE in 1987, has been announced as a character in the upcoming new Cinematic DC Universe under the creative direction of new Studio Head, James Gunn. In DC's previous cinematic Universe, the DCEU, Lord was introduced in 2020's Wonder Woman: 1984 as one of film's two main antagonists and was portrayed by actor Pedro Pascal. But as with nearly all the other DCEU-portrayed characters, the role has been recast, with actor SEAN GUNN confirmed as the new Maxwell Lord. While the character of Maxwell Lord was first introduced (in Justice League #1, 1987) as a regular human, it soon was revealed that his involvement with the League was due to his being controlled by a villainous computer program called KILG%RE. Later, Lord would be revealed to have telepathic mind control powers thanks to events in the DC event series, Invasion (1988). Lord's ability to force others to do his will came to a head in Infinite Crisis (2006), during which Lord is both discovered by BLUE BEETLE, whom Lord then kills, and then himself is ultimately killed by WONDER WOMAN in her effort to free SUPERMAN from his mental powers. Later events would see Lord returned to active living status and becoming one of the heads of the clandestine organization, CHECKMATE. While Sean Gunn's casting announcement effectively makes his Maxwell Lord one of the new DCU's earliest confirmed characters, it's entirely unclear where Lord may make his First Appearance. As the new DCU's Wonder Woman still years away from her debut and no plans for a Justice League until at least the next phase of the DCU, Gunn's Lord does make an excellent candidate for the new DCU streaming series WALLER which sees Viola Davis reprising her role as AMANDA WALLER from James Gunn's The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker projects. Considering both Lord and Waller in DC canon were affiliated with Checkmate, which also falls under the auspices of the US Government like Waller's own Task Force X, Maxwell Lord may very well be cast as a competitive, if not antagonistic rival, to Waller's authority when her titular series debuts in 2025 on HBO Max.
