Description: Original chromolithograph by Julius Bien entitled "Dog Family-Canidae" Bien (1826-1909) was a major New York printer and map maker and was an important pioneer in the development of chromolithography. Originally from Germany, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cassell and at the Stadel's Institute in Frankfort. Emigrating to the United States, he opened a lithographic studio in New York in 1850. Specializing in scientific illustration, his subject matter included birds and other animals, plant and ocean life, maps and charts. During his career Bien exhibited and won awards at prestigious venues in Philadelphia (1876); Paris (1878); Chicago (1893); and Paris again in 1900. A member of a number of scientific societies, from 1886 to 1890 he also served as president of the National Lithographer's Association. Size of the image is 5 x 8.
