Condition: A very good or better copy with minor wear, dings and markings. Interior bright and clean. Binding very firm. The photos are the best guide to condition. Context: The first illustrated version of the collection "In A Glass Darkly" (though individual tales had been illustrated before e.g. 'Carmilla'). This 1929 version appears in two variants: this black cloth with gilt titles version (the true first) and an orange cloth variant with black titles (likely a cheaper edition or a remainder). Sheets same in both variants, only difference is the binding. Includes many of Le Fanu's best tales of supernatural horror inc. 'Carmilla', which in my opinion is at least as important in the evolution of vampire literature as Polidori's "The Vampyre" and Stoker's "Dracula". Indeed, the dropped chapter 'Dracula's Guest' from Stoker's novel is heavily inspired by 'Carmilla'. Ardizonne's competent, sketch-like illustrations are quick, evocative and free-flowing. An attractive, heavy & substantial book with many full page and smaller embedded illustrations. "In A Glass Darkly" is Le Fanu's key original collection, followed by "Chronicles Of Golden Friars" and "The Purcell Papers". (Though the Brinsley Le Fanu anthology "The Watcher & Other Weird Stories" is as keenly sought.) This copy is in better condition than average. Important Terms: Returns are not accepted.
