They're unique among versions made on a modern piano and well worth hearing. Feltsman's readings are of the old school. They're Romantic in inspiration, and they're pianistic, with a good deal of pedal and a tremendous variety of attack. But they possess these qualities without being monumental. With Glenn Gould playing Bach you get the impression of hearing two titans of intellect in a small room together, but Feltsman isn't like that at all; his preludes and fugues are quiet for the most part, and reflective. Their most distinctive characteristic is their variety; this is a four-disc set, covering both books, that you could, if you had but world enough and time, sit and listen to straight through without feeling that the music was bearing down on you. Feltsman varies tempo, articulation, dynamics (although he mostly avoids sweeping dynamic changes within the course of a single piece), and mood, turning each piece, even the fugues, into a little song without words of its own. You can argue that this isn't Bach, and you'd probably be right, but the engaging booklet notes by American critic Tim Page point out, among other things, that nobody really knows for sure. Each set of preludes and fugues hangs together and builds toward a conclusion. The spacious concert hall ambiance of New York's American Academy of Arts and Letters is ideal for what Feltsman was trying to accomplish here, and overall the reissue is more than justifiable. Highly recommended, especially for Gould fans; Feltsman is Gould's polar opposite, even though they both occupy the same small corner of the realm of Bach interpretation.
