Description: John P. Troy ( 1869-1939) was the official Cornell University photographer from 1900-1928. Tooley & McAlpine was a furniture store in Stamford, NY. I found reference to it in a Stamford New York Public Neighbors Group on Facebook. In 1935 the store was closed and became another furniture store called Spoor and Tillapaugh. Stamford, NY is a little over 110 miles from Ithaca New York where J.P. Troy was the official Cornell University photographer till 1928. He was well-known and his obituary is in the New York Times. I believe this is a picture of the Tooley and the McAlpine families~~maybe a family reunion~~taken in the early 20th century, possibly anytime from 1908-1935 ( I am not sure when the Tooley/McAlpine clan was merged). Anyway, the large tent in the background seems to indicate a gathering place for all these people. The variety of early 20th century dress is amazing! There is a tricorn hat on one man, a headpiece with feathers on another, Scottish Highland Clan attire on some, and beautiful early 20th century women's dresses and hats. A very interesting piece of history. The size is 39 1/4" x 8 1/2" not including the 3/4" frame. The frame is not of the same period as the photograph. On the back is written 'Tooley & McAlpine' I believe that the piece of cardboard which says 'The Vermont Country Store' is there just to hold the picture in the frame and does not have special significance. The blue which you see in the pictures has something to do with my flash. The blue is not in the photograph. I will mail the photograph in the frame to protect the photograph.
