Normally a single 1.5 volt battery can not light an LED, as they require 2-3 volts to operate. The Joule Thief boosts the battery voltage to power the LED's. The circuit will work down to approximately 0.5 volts, so batteries you would normally throw out, will still power the circuit! Battery not included.
