Joichi Hoshi - Trained in oil painting, Joichi Hoshi began making prints after working in a printing shop, beginning with silkscreen before concentrating on woodblocks. He began exhibiting with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai in 1948 and became a member few years later. Hoshi's prints focus on nature, and he created a large series on stars and constellations before turning to his most famous subject, trees. His intricately carved designs commonly feature a single tree set against a solid background of metallic pigment. Intricately carved and demonstrating an incredible technical achievement, his beautiful prints have layers of rich color and texture.
