Description: This is a custom 12" figure commemorating a real American outlaw and gunman of the Old West, John Wesley Hardin. John Wesley Hardin killed his first man at the age of 15. Hardin had challenged a former slave of his uncles, named Maje to a wrestling match. Hardin won the match. According to Hardin, Maje later jumped him on the road and Hardin shot him five times. Hardin's father did not believe his son would get a fair trial so he ordered him into hiding. The story goes that three Union troops finally located where Hardin was hiding. Hardin was warned that the soldiers were coming for him. Instead of running John Wesley Hardin decided to confront the soldiers. He killed them and was himself wounded in the shootout. After that Hardin became a fugitive. He became involved with more outlaw types and sordid characters as well as some well known gunfighters and lawmen of the time. Hardin had a fascination for Wild Bill Hickok and actually met Hickok on a couple of occasions. Hardin is also known to have been on friendly terms with Ben Thompson and Phil Coe gunfighters and partners in the Bull's Head Tavern in Abilene. Thompson had an altercation with Hickok and tried to incite Hardin to kill Hickok. John Wesley Hardin told Thompson that if he felt Hickok needed killing, why didn't he kill Hickok himself. Hardin lead a colorful outlaw life but he eventually went to prison. There in prison, Hardin wrote his autobiography. The problem was that Hardin was a bit wild in his story telling sometimes embellishing his part in certain events and at other times making things up entirely. Hardin did once kill a man for snoring. The snoring man had actually been drinking heavily with Hardin that evening. They slept in adjoining rooms. Hardin was wakened from his sleep by the man's snoring and yelled several times for the man to roll over. Still drunk Hardin started blazing away with his six-gun. The second shot hit the man in the head killing him instantly. Hardin claims to have killed 42 men while actual records put the number at 27. John Wesley Hardin spent 17 years of a 25 year sentence in prison. He was pardoned early and actually passed the bar to become a lawyer. John Wesley Hardin later died how he had lived, in violence. Constable John Selmon sr. (former gunman and outlaw) had noticed Hardin in a saloon in El Paso, shooting dice. Hardin had quarreled with Selmon sr.'s son earlier and pistol whipped him. Selmon sr. walked up behind Hardin in the saloon and shot him in the head. Selmon sr' claimed self defense, that Hardin had been drawing his pistol as he walked in the door. Selmon sr.'s first trial ended in a hung jury. While waiting for a new trial John Selmon sr. was himself killed in an argument over a card game. John Wesley Hardin was truly a colorful character of the old west. Figure designed mainly for display purposes for the wild west fan. Please note the following-when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit.
