He spent weekends in the studio and painting with his father, a prominent California artist. One of his father’s closest friends artist Will Foster, also a well known artist who frequented the Powell studio, provided young John with loads of effective coaching. John’s painting is also influenced by two years he spent in Japan studying Far Eastern arts. As well as his study of art a the University of Mexico in Mexico city greatly.After returning to the United States, John settled in Los Angeles, CA and continue painting, but, also was involved in antiques and was a well respected antiques dealer for over many years. His paintings express this trade. John Powell’s paintings are in vivid colors, baroque and harmonious depicting his passion for color, flowers, garden, pottery and art from around the world. Many of his collected antiques, vases, and flowers from his harden have become subjects of his prolific creationof gorgeous, vibrant paintings.
