Description: A Rare Georgian Period Navigational Ruler by Gilbert of London From a private London collection. Many Gilbert instruments are housed in museums around the world and have been sold by the leading auction houses of Bonhams, Sothebys and Christie’s. The Gilbert family were well known scientific instrument makers in London from the middle of the 18th century to the late 1830's, working from premises at Tower Hill and Leadenhall. The ruler carries the Gilbert makers mark, inscribed ‘Gilbert London’ to the centre top. There is also a name on the ruler of ‘Ronald W King’ I presume a previous owner. Condition: In good functioning order. The rollers work well. Tarnishing to the metalwork commensurate with age and as to be expected. Name of ‘Ronald W King’ has been added at a later date. A superbly crafted item. Measurements: Approximately 30.5cm in length. Re Condition: I always describe items to the absolute best of my ability.
