This is a very interesting piece. Comes framed and matted with original Western Union telegraph and a newspaper article explaining why the recipient turned it down for a scholarship instead. The letter is on White House Letter Head and has JFK's signature in autopen. The newspaper article reads "A misunderstood and misquotes volunteer has set the record straight about why he changed his mind and will not enter the Peace Corps. Edward Merritt Blake of 10063 Reevsbury Dr Beverly Hills, told The Citizen News the reason he turned down the offer had nothing to do with not wanting to build sewers in Colombia, as had been reported.  The decision was based on having received a graduate scholarship from the Walcott Foundations to study international relations for a year at George Washington University in Washington DC.  It was reported that Blake who attended Pennsylvania Star University and was graduated from Prinicipia College in Elsha Ill, with a bachelor’s degree in English and history , would not enter the Peace Corps because he had volunteered as a teacher and would be put on a work crew.  The unpopularity of such an attitude was evident, according to Blake, who said he received several postcards yesterday afternoon after the incorrect information appeared in a morning newspaper.  The correct story is that as soon as Blake received word from the Peace Corps that he had been accepted he got in touch with the headquarters in Washington DC. He talked to Sergent Schriver, who is in charge of the Peace Corps operations, and then with Ted Kennedy, Schrivers assistant about his problem. Kennedy said since Blakes aim was to join the Foreign Service he would like to check with the State Department before rendering an opinion.  After checking the young brother of the President wired Blake to take the scholarship. He also requested that Blake keep in touch with the Peace Corps concerning his future plans.  So you see, they (The Peace Corps) actually made the decision, said Blake.  Blake who is 25 and not 26 as was stated, is currently working in the merchandising department of station KTTV. He is also attending UCLA summer school." Please make note Free Shipping as well as upgraded shipping methods are for lower 48 US Destinations.
