Joe Schmidt is former star College and NFL linebacker who played for the Detroit Lions from 1953 to 1965. Joe then became the Head Coach of the Lions from 1967 to 1972. He was a First Team All-American at the University of Houston and he joined a strong Lions team in 1953. Joe helped the Lions win the NFL Championship in 1953 and the following season he was named to the first of ten consecutive Pro Bowls. He was a great all-around middle linebacker and was noted for his strong tackling. In his career, Joe was an 8-time All-Pro and he was twice named NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1960 and 1963). Joe led the Lions to another NFL title in 1957 and he continued his outstanding play throughout his playing career, which ended in 1965. In 1967, Joe became the Lions Head Coach and he held that position through the 1972 season. His Lion teams were always competitive and he led them to the playoffs in 1970. Joe was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1973 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000. He was also named to the NFL 1950's All-Decade Team and he is generally considered the greatest defensive player in the history of the Lions.
