Numbered by Publisher SOUTHART - PARKWAY Jaguar From Wikipedia Synonyms Felis onca Linnaeus, 1758 The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large felid species and the only extant member of the genus Panthera native to the Americas. The jaguar's present range extends from Southwestern United States and Mexico in North America, across much of Central America, and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina in South America. Though there are single cats now living within the Western United States, the species has largely been extirpated from the United States since the early 20th century. It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List; and its numbers are declining. Threats include loss and fragmentation of habitat. About Artist John James Audubon From Wikipedia John James Audubon (born Jean Rabin; April 26, 1785 – January 27, 1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book entitled The Birds of America (1827–1839), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon is also known for having identified 25 new species. American artist John James Audubon achieved worldwide fame in the 1840s with his large-scale folio of prints, The Birds of North America. Later in his career, he partnered with his son, John Woodhouse Audubon, and Dr. John Bachman of Charleston to document the region’s quadrupeds. Like his birds, Audubon’s Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America are still considered the finest prints of their kind published in America. He eventually produced 150 folio drawings, hand-colored and printed by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia.
