The Experience disbanded in 1969. Hendrix formed the Band of Gypsies with Billy Cox (bass), a friend from his military days, and Buddy Miles (ds/vos), with whom he collaborated on Electric Ladyland. They performed at New York's Fillmore East from New Year's Eve to New Year's in '69-'70. This work is a live album containing the scenes from that time. This is Band of Gypsies' only release since they disbanded without releasing any studio albums. It was also the last work Hendrix released before his death. This band, whose members are all black, is characterized by a stronger sense of soul and funk than Experience. We get a glimpse of the direction Hendrix was heading in after ``Electric Ladyland''.
