He led the Mountaineers to the NCAA Championship Game in 1959. West was the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player in 1959. A 2-time All-Southern Conference Player of the Year, he was also a 2-time All-American. His Number 44 is retired by West Virginia, and he is a member of the Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. As an Olympian representing the United States, he helped bring home the Gold Medal in 1960 and also a Gold Medal in the 1959 Pan American Games.A 1st Round pick of the Minneapolis Lakers (2nd Overall) in the 1960 NBA Draft, West played with the Lakers from 1960-1974, winning an NBA Championship in 1972. Along the way, West was a 14-time All-Star, 1972 All-Star Game MVP, led the NBA in Scoring in 1970, led the NBA in Assists in 1972, was 10-time All-NBA First Team and was 2-time All-NBA Second Team and was Finals MVP in 1969. One of the All-Time Greats, West was Named to NBA 35th Anniversary, 50th Anniversary and 75th Anniversary Teams. His Number 44 is retired by the Lakers.
