An opening reception is Saturday, May 25. Poklop was a Chicago housewife in the 1950s and 60s who had studied at the Chicago Art Institute and University of Illinois, but never catapulted into the work-world until after her husband died suddenly. Her story tells the story of countless women at this time of social change. The SAA exhibit chronicles Poklop’s work from the late 1970s through her final series of paintings, created in 2004. She died in May 2012. Jean’s Story Jean once wrote that she was born an artist. A photograph of a perhaps seven-year-old girl, sketchbook spread across her lap, serves as evidence. Without any particular artist role models in her family, she was drawing and attending classes at Chicago’s Art Institute at a young age. She studied painting at the University of Illinois in the early 1950’s. Later, she wrote of this experience:We were enamored with our male instructors and abstract expressionism in the 50’s; careers in art were not for women students, even though we won the prizes and had superior grades. I could not understand the position of my woman instructor and only years later began a correspondence with her that keeps me up to date on her successful career as a painter. Jean married soon after she graduated. A year later, she had a daughter, and then spent a year living in Europe, where her husband was stationed in the army. She then settled into raising a family (two sons followed) and supporting her husband’s career.Gerry, my husband, was supportive of my work (it was not a career) and for some time I managed to be accepted into juried shows and keep in the touch with the art scene. The paintings were fragmented images of the city, many incorporating children. As my family grew I worked more and more with images of children…As time went on I became so buy accepting commission that I painted for the limited audience of my community. In the Fall of 1976, Jean’s world turned upside down with the sudden death of her husband, and at 42 she was forced to reconsider her identity. Eventually, the women’s movement and her painting led her, as she wrote, “back into the world.” This exhibit chronicles her work from the late 70s through her final series of paintings, created in 2004.This website documents an exhibition honoring the work of Chicago-area artist Jean Poklop (1934-2012), which was presented at the Springfield Art Association, 25 May – 22 June 2013. The exhibition presents a cross section of Jean’s work from the late 70s until her death. The exhibition was curated by Jean’s daughter, Laurie Poklop, and Betsy Dollar, Director of the Springfield Art Association.Patterns of Life As Jean developed her identity as a painter in the late 70s and early 80s, she was influenced and inspired by several important people in her life. One of those people was Chenault Kelly whom Jean met while attending a Women’s Art Workshop at Allerton Park, under the auspices of the University of Illinois. Jean described her first encounter with Chenault:Here was Dr. Chenault Kelly, for over seventy years following her own creative sensibilities, thoroughly enjoying life as a single woman. She had managed to receive her doctorate and secure a faculty position against all odds, taking the Dean of the University to Court at a time when nice girls were at coming out parties. Chenault offered me confidence and friendship. That summer Chenault did a painting that had an uncanny ring of truth. She is a naïve painter using simple forms to express her feelings. In this painting she dealt with life and death in the images of a central figure, a woman painting, surrounded by still like objects; death, a cow skull to one side and life, lilies on the other. She did not know me, but I was the one painting those flowers and the painting became a symbol of my struggle. I didn’t know it, but the Women’s Movement had come to me. Between 1979 and 1981 Jean completed over 20 canvases exploring her emotional reactions during a visit to the home of Chenault Kelly in Charleston, Illinois. Of a June 1979 visit to Charleston, Jean wrote:I spent the weekend at the home of Chenault and was captivated by her lifestyle, her 100 year old home and most of all her stories of her mother, a courageous pioneer woman who has assembled a masterpiece in the setting she had created for her family. Pattern everywhere, in beautifully made quilts, rugs, drapes and needlepoint, art with a capital “A”. I felt like an intruder in her world, yet I was at home.On that trip I became involved with American art as it was practiced by women in their homes. The cultural heritage of needlework and fiber pieces created by women, not for fame or fortune but to bring aesthetic and spiritual sustenance to themselves and to their families, became my subjects.
