Description: We are pleased to offer a very rare abstract painting done in the early 1970's by the writer / philosopher JEAN PAUL SARTREWe purchased it in 1999 at the estate liquidation of actor / restaurateur NICKY BLAIRYears of research has given us a direct line to Nicky Blair in NYC after World War 2 running a burlesque show associated with a hotel on 8th Ave where Blair would have met these two great thinkers when they took in Nicky's burlesque show one night Jean Paul Sartre and Albert Camus came to NYC after the war as foreign correspondence reporters and were overwhelmed with the City of New York. It has been said that they laughed at the local mortuary sign stating "You Die - We Do The Rest" We have read countless stories of their visit and they were impressed with the lifestyle and were received with open arms. We find it funny that right after Sartre returned to France Nicky put the entire burlesque show on hold and did a stage production of a play by Sartre (No Exit) and even hired Ray Bolger to play the lead. We feel Sartre would have remembered that kind gesture. It was after Nicky moved to the Hollywood Hills and began his famous Sunday afternoon dinners that he would cross paths with Henry Miller (the writer). We contacted a family member of Mr Miller about ten years ago and he did not recall if Sartre knew Miller or if they ever even corresponded Nicky would eventually move his events to a permanent location and open a famous restaurant known as Nicky Blair's and soon it was a celebrity hangout. Nicky Blair's on the Sunset Strip was a big success for a number of years and was filled with contemporary art from his private collection Our research has confirmed through a conversation with the interior decorator of the restaurant that a large Henry Miller watercolor would "greet" the guests as they entered the restaurant. We have never been able to confirm if this painting done by Sartre was ever on display in the eatery or if it remained in Nicky's private residence Jean Paul Sartre is listed in one art reference guide - Davenports 1999- as an 20th Century Abstract painter with one small auction on record other than some small sketches that have been sold over the years that can be linked to a certain publicationWe also were reaching out in communication with Sartre's adopted daughter whom he left his entire literary estate to when he passed away in 1980. She passed away before our correspondence reached her home in Paris. We know through research that Sartre was losing his eyesight in the early 1970's. He had artist surrounding him like Helene De Beauvoir and we feel it was a friend that got him a paint brush and canvass and said " Paint what you are seeing here in the home..." A bowl of fruit?? A banana and apple...? It is our belief that the subject matter is what it would have looked like as his eyesight was failing. It is a very personal view to see the world around you in an abstract way. He was an modern abstract expressionist painter because that is how he was seeing the world around him. We added a few pictures of an ad for Nicky Blair's on the Sunset Strip ( Penthouse Magazine - November 1973) We understand the painting needs to be restored by a professional as there is paint loss and a few places where the canvas is exposed to the frame. Please look at all photographs as they are part of the way we describe our listings We can also work with your private art shipper but have had great success with moving artwork via Federal Express We have always felt that this is an important work done by an important figure in French life in the 20th Century We welcome all comments and questions via eBayWe have been working with clients from all over the world and welcome all International clients working with eBay .Thank you emaxrob Track Page Views With Auctiva's Counter
