Description: Beautiful Rare Hand-Colored Engravingby French artist Jean-Paul Alaux (1876-1955) "Sur l'étang des Carpes à Fontainebleau, La frégate du Prince Impérial 1928" "On the carp pond in Fontainebleau, The Imperial Prince's frigate 1928" Lovely piece! Soft, dreamy color palette. Depicts a scene with the frigate built for the Imperial Prince, Napoleon IV, when he was a child. (Designed for the education of the only son of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, the Imperial Prince, this frigate was built by the brest arsenal workshops and offered to the child in 1863. This boat, 3.86 m long and 1.10 m wide and which was immediately put into the water on the pond of carp, consists of a boat adopting the silhouette of a 92-gun ship. A true reduction of a high-board warship, it includes a castle, fire hydrants, an anchor, three masts and is decorated with a small bench and a pair of oars. A favorite toy of Louis Napoleon and on which he sailed as a child, this frigate is also one of the emblematic objects of the castle, witness to happy moments of the imperial family in Fontainebleau.) Artwork is framed and double matted. Wood frame shows wear and matte looks to have a light water stain at the bottom. The artwork does not seem to be affected. The frame backing is matte material stapled to the frame, has some residue on it. Frame measures approx. 21" wide x 17 1/8" tall.Matte opening measures approx. 14" wide x 10 1/8" tall.
