Is this merely another not-so-subliminal sampled message? Try again. It's Keoki singing, and he doesn't stop. Jealousy, due Tuesday on Moonshine Music, marks the flamboyant DJ's first full foray into vocals — and it's already won the approval of his toughest critic. "My mom loves it," Keoki said. "At first my label was like, 'What? You want to sing?' I got some vocal coaching and worked at it. It came out good in the studio. I'm a little nervous. I hope everyone likes it." Keoki, like fellow American DJ/producers BT and Moby, wears his rock and pop influences on his sleeve. A seasoned spinmaster who has released seven mix albums in 6 years, he names the Foo Fighters and Britney Spears among his favorites. Thus Love and Rockets' Daniel Ash contributed guitars and vocals to the title track, while several studio guitarists and drummers pitched in on the ultra-funky cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax." "I love listening to music. That's all I do. Dance music is just a part of it," Keoki explained. "Everything becomes an influence. I like to take it in my own direction." Keoki began DJing in the early '90s and released several mix tapes on the streets of New York before signing with Moonshine in 1994. He released Journeys by DJ later that year and continued to issue mix CDs until his "Caterpillar" became an underground hit in 1997. Keoki made his production debut later that year with Ego-Trip, and followed that album in 1998 with a remixed version titled Altered-Ego-Trip, which included tracks by the Crystal Method, Cirrus and Rabbit in the Moon. A product of 3 years' work, Jealousy is laden with studio effects. The creepy "Real World" opens with a vocal sample that croaks like a frog until it's cut off by an operator message and then a dial tone. The lyrics reflect Keoki's view of his music career. "One more compromise I won't be making," he sings, "one more easy way out I won't be taking." "That's probably the deepest song I wrote," Keoki said. "It was to the heart. I heard Stevie Wonder say if you sing something, you have to really believe it to get it across. 'Real World' is that." Keoki also penned a song about one of his addictions: Napster. He wrote "Pass It On" as a fight song for the controversial music-swapping program's millions of users. "It worked. We had 60,000 downloads the first week," Keoki said. "[Napster founder] Shawn Fanning is a friend of mine. I'm a rebel at heart when it comes to those kinds of things." Keoki will support Jealousy with more than a dozen shows this spring. Although he will remain behind the decks this time around, he's planning a full-fledged production for the future. "I want a Kid Rock stage. I want to move around like Britney," Keoki said. "The visual part needs to be up to par with the music. It's my dream to perform onstage, to sing and dance."
