JAZZ Tommy Flanagan - "Sea Changes" - CD - Evidence Records (SAME DAY SHIPPING)

Description: So the riders of the darkness pass On their circuit: the luminous island Of the self trembles and waits, Waits for us all, my friends,Where the sea's big brush recolorsThe dying lives, and the unborn smiles.—Lawrence DurrellIn the hustle and bustle and clutter and sputter of our land-based lives, its quite easy and understandable for us to lose sight of the fact that the substance of our human bodies is actually 75% water, good old H2O! Just as the rains which rise from the sea inevitably flow back into it, and the seven continents crumble, like the sands of time, back into the ocean, so are we inexorably drawn to the briny deep when we try to understand the murky and mysterious origins of life on this planet. For a major portion of the inspired music to be heard on this CD, pianist/composerTommy Flanagan has returned to some of the material he recorded for his first LP under his own name, Overseas, done in Stockholm in 1957 for the Swedish company Metronome, and later licensed by Prestige. Born (in 1930) and raised in Detroit, Flanagan moved to New York in 1956, where he quickly started to work regularly with J.J. Johnson, Oscar Pettiford, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Coleman Hawkins. In the summer of 1957, Tommy made a three-month tour of Sweden with a J.J.Johnson Quintet that also featured the Belgian reedman Bobby Jaspar, drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Wilbur Little. On August 15 of that year, Flanagan, Jones and Little made the historic Overseas trio recording, which included Tommy's compositions Eclypso, Beat's Up, Verdandi, and Delarna, as well as the Charlie Parker classic Relaxin' At Camarillo (all reprised on this new CD). As Flanagan explains, "During that tour of Sweden, we played in a lot of very beautiful folk parks' throughout the country. I was motivated to write Delarna by the picturesque beauty of the park with that name. With its brisk tempo changes, the song Verdandi was dedicated to the Swedish Temperance Society. I think it's best to be sober to get through that tune!"The maritime motif of this present recording, Sea Changes, has been broadened to include Tommy's thoughtful and poignant readings of Irving Berlin's How Deep Is The Ocean?, Johnny Green's I Cover The Waterfront, and Harold Arlen's Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea. Flanagan reaffirms his stature as one of the most penetrating bluesmen of the jazzworld with his soulful version of Ma Rainey's timeless lament about a jive-talking circuit court judge, C.C.Rider. Tommy's tender and expansive solo piano treatment of the Swedish tolk song Dear Old Stockholm clears a path of lyric inventiveness wide enough for any heart's imagination to dance upon. This current edition of the Tommy Flanagan Trio, with the deep groove of bassist Peter Washington and consummate taste and sensitivity of drummer Lewis Nash, has been working and growing steadily for over five years now. The orchestral fullness of their sound, the consistently creative level of their intuitive interplay, and their soaring swing all combine to qualify this Trio for serious consideration as one of the finest in jazz history-in the same league with Kelly/Chambers/Cobb, Peterson/Brown/Thigpen, or Jamal/Crosby/Fournier.Tommy Flanagan recently celebrated his 67th birthday during the final night of a two-week, SRO engagement at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York City. The impassioned reaction of the international audience that packed the club for those performances-and particularly the glowing music to be heard and experienced on Sea Changes offers undeniable evidence of the supremely high level of expressive power and resourcefulness that Tommy Flanagan has reached in his continued development as an artist.Like many truly great artists, Tommy Flanagan interweaves many aesthetic disciplines and talents into his unsurpassed musical story-telling. As one of the great tap dancers of jazz piano—and as one of its most melodic improvisers-Tommy Flanagan has the uncanny ability, to make both the notes and the beat sing and swing. By continually exploring the inner frontiers of harmony and rhythm, Tommy Flanagan never fails to chart new musical waters for himself and for his listeners.—Todd BarkanMay, 1997 ORDER BEFORE 2 PM CENTRAL - SAME DAY SHIPPING PRMCD245
