Signed and inscribed by the author on the front free end paper. Sophie Tucker (1887 – 1966) was a Ukrainian-born American singer, comedian, actress, and radio personality. Known for her stentorian delivery of comical and risqué songs, she was one of the most popular entertainers in America during the first half of the 20th century. She starred on Broadway, in vaudeville, cabaret, burlesque, motion pictures, television, and was an important recording artist from the days of primitive Edison cylinder recordings to Decca and Mercury Lp’s of the early 50s, and into the “Rock era.” She appeared on Ed Sullivan’s December 6, 1964, CBS television broadcast, which also featured Gary Lewis and the Playboys. From the dust jacket: “SOPHIE TUCKER was born on the road--not the Keith or Orpheum circuits, but a road leading out of Russia. Three months later she appeared on the American scene. With no advance notices she began almost immediately to win an ever-growing public. From waiting on tables and singing in her parents' restaurant, she crashed Tin Pan Alley via a New York beer garden where a girl's reputation tarnished too easily. She next went on a tour of small-town circuits, “coon shouting" in blackface and singing in burlesque. She hit her stride in the heyday of vaudeville, scored triumphs at the Palace and in the Ziegfeld Follies, and went on to become one of America's best-loved entertainers. Her autobiography is a real American success story, studded with famous names from a glorious theatrical era--Nora Bayes, Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor, Weber & Fields, and many others. More than this, it is the self-portrait of a lusty, lovable personality whose big voice and big heart have made her a legend in the entertainment world.” CONDITION: This Book is in very good condition for its age. Tight binding, clean text. The dust jacket is preserved with the mylar cover. Please see pictures. Fast, free shipping.
