Description: Your purchase includes a fine antique late 1910s heavily weighted chess set produced by Jaques London and its matching case. Great care was taken to carve these pieces. The rooks and knights are emblazoned with the red crowns that are characteristic of the Jaques London brand. “Jaques London” is inscribed on the bottom of both kings. Each piece is heavily weighted. The chessmen show wear appropriate for their age. The black pieces have some chips due to the characteristics of ebony wood. Affected pieces include one rook, the king’s cross, which was replaced (please see photos), the knights ears, queens coronet, and a pawn collar. This is typical for over a century of use. The white pieces have developed a heavy patina over the boxwood over years of play, creating a pleasant, warm glow. All of the bottom felts are in excellent shape and are original. The case is of sturdy construction, with a hinge top lid and metal clasps. Inside the lid, the green label remains crisp and legible. A deep burgundy felt lines the inside, a color that is less common. The cases are important in verifying the production date and authenticity of Jaques pieces. This one is inscribed with “5004” on the bottom, (see photos) which means the set is a 3.5” king and would have been manufactured as early as 1917. The pieces are also stylistically of this era. This confirms that it is a match to the chessmen. The king measures 3.5”, a versatile size; it is small enough to bring to a club or tournament while also having a great presence over the board.
