Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and recently obtained in Tokyo is a three volume set of the more difficult-to-obtain books from the well-regarded Japanese MARU SPECIAL series: “JAPANESE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS AT WAR, VOL 1”, Number 129, November 1987; “JAPANESE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS AT WAR, VOL 2”, Number 130, December 1987; and “JAPANESE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS AT WAR, VOL 3”, Number 131, January 1988. As many of you already know, the 135-volume MARU SPECIAL series was published from 1975 to 1988. Up through the 91st issue, they each focused on a naval vessel or family of vessels, most belonging to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). Beginning with Number 92, the focus expanded to include naval campaigns or periods of World War II history. These particular MARU SPECIALs being offered are later volumes and they collectively cover the aircraft carriers of the IJN. Although the titles imply the focus of this three volume set should be actions shots of the carriers ‘at war’, much of the information presented has been covered in previous MARU SPECIALs. However, there are some unique photographs and if you are interested in rounding out your IJN collection, these are must-haves! These three volumes cover the major aircraft carriers such as the SHOKAKU, ZUIKAKU, AKAGI, KAGA, SORYU, and HIRYU, but also lesser known carriers such as the SHOHO, ZUIHO, HOSHO, RYUJO, JUNYO, CHITOSE, CHIYODA, TAIYO, UNRYU, CHUYO, and KAIYO as well as a few seaplane carriers. All the MARU SPECIALs offer a very popular combination of period photographs (some with rare detail), line drawings, and affordability, and this one is no exception. Although printed with Japanese text and regardless of the difficulty of translation, the MARU SPECIALs remain very popular with naval historians and advanced IJN modelers and these out-of-print gems are still frequently referenced. These 88 page, 7.25 x 10.25 inch vintage classics have some great photographs, line drawings, and each also has a nicely-done color fold-out. Condition ranges from good+ to very good; all suffer slight wear to their covers, edges, and corners. Volume 130 also has a 2 inch (?) crease on the bottom right corner.
