Description: Thank you for seeing. The banknote in this sale is an old Japanese bill issued around 1866. It is called “Shido-sen” and was issued by a temple. It is marked on the front as 2 Monme (1 Monme = 3.75 g of silver). The location where the bill was issued is in an area called 和州, where Nara Prefecture is located today. Size: 3.3×15.3cm Shido-sen : Shido-sen have existed since ancient times, lending money collected both inside and outside the temple and using the interest earned to manage and operate the temple. By the Muromachi period (1333-1573), temples began to lend surplus funds collected, becoming more like for-profit financial enterprises. Although in reality, the loans were for profit, they were ostensibly for temple administration to raise funds to cover expenses, so interest was low and many people used the loans. In addition, due to the political unrest of the time, many people who sought salvation through faith donated money and other items one after another, and many people deposited their possessions in temple warehouses, so many temples used such funds as a source of investment. In the early modern period, shrine coins declined due to the Edo shogunate's control of temples, but it was not uncommon for temples and parishioners to continue lending shrine coins and nominal money to each other. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shipping: I use the Japan Post airmail to ship items.
