Description: Among Rothwoman's earliest works, these original "hand made plates and slip trailed decoration on white bisque with clear over glaze" are a true find for collectors of midcentury California pottery. Rothwoman only made a few of each design, painted by her hand, and no two are exactly alike. This is a very rare collection of six Janet Rothwoman original slab-made stoneware plates. Hand formed and hand painted in California, each plate features a unique Rothwoman design and a lead-free clear over glaze finish. All plates have an impressed backstamp that reads: JANET ROTHWOMAN STONEWARE NO LEAD Designs include: ADAM & EVE, BUTTERFLY, WOMAN, ROOSTER, SPIROGRAPH, and DRAGON Circa 1969-1971, this rare collection is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or issues of any kind. Each plate has a free shape and measures approximately 10.5" - see photos. My parents were very active in the art community and owned the Flavia Gallery in Laguna Beach, California from 1965 until the early 1970s. They sold art in street fairs, at festivals, and in private art shows. During this time, they befriended Janet Rothwoman and her husband, studio potter Jerry Rothman (see screenshot of Rothwoman's original website). Jerry was a part of the Ceramic Revolution and an artist at the Otis Art Institute, working with such greats as Peter Voulkos, Kenneth Price, and Paul Soldner. Some of the imagery in Janet's first stoneware pieces are said to have been influenced by Voulkos. FREE UPS Ground shipping or pick-up in Santa Barbara, CA.
