Description: Jack Kerouac'sWall Art, Including Probable Buddhist Wheel of Dharma or Dharmachakra Decorated in Marker by Kerouac. 1-United Card Company "Smile Plagues" easel-back wall art, ca. 1967, depicting a battered vulture announcing: "PATIENCE MY ASS! I'M GOING OUT AND KILL SOMETHING". The condition suggests it was well-loved, and mounted at various times using both masking tape and staples. 7" x 9". 2. Printed chipboard Ship's or Wagon wheel toy, which is believed to have been Turned into a Buddhist Wheel of Dharma or Dharmachakra symbol by Kerouac himself with hand-applied felt tip marker decoration verso. A little misshapen, and with isolated staples. 13" diameter. All signs point to it being a toy turned Dharmachakra or Wheel of Dharma. Such as Kerouac's obvious and well documented studies into Buddhism and religion. Plus, the red marker shade matches one used in another well documented Kerouac item in my collection. After being introduced to Buddhism in the mid-1950s, Kerouac devoted himself to its study, interpretation, and practice. His works "Some of the Dharma" (1955-56) and "The Dharma Bums" (1958) and The Scripture of the Golden Eternity explore the mid-century American quest for enlightenment. The Dharmachakra Or Wheel of Dharma is an ancient symbol which most often represents the Buddha's dharma, or law. The visually represented dharmachakra can have a range of even-number spokes: 8, 12, 24, or more. The eight-spoked wheel (shown in Kerouac's example) represents the Noble Eightfold Path, which is the process of changing one's world view through the painful acquisition of knowledge. Following the Path eventually enables the rebirth of the individual. Condition. The Dharmachakra wheel. Good Plus. A few tears to the thick cardboard to remove something that once was there it looks like. Marker applied presumably by Kerouac himself. A few staples(see photos). Light handling wear and edge wear otherwise. Overall... Amazing piece of Beat Generation History. Now in a rigid toplader. 2-Condition Smile Plagues Vulture Wall Art Card. Good. Moderate to heavy handling wear and edge wear. This piece was well loved. Scattered creasing, tape and tape residue. Moderate tanning and some losses. Now in a rigid toplader. COA Included.
