Description: This is a Japanese chisel made by a skilled blacksmith using traditional forging techniques with laminated steel construction. The high carbon steel provides an extremely sharp edge while the soft backing steel provides toughness and durability. Condition: The chisel is in excellent used condition. The back has been flattened and it has been sharpened to 8000 grit on Shapton Glass stones. The hoop has been set and the handle mushroomed. Save yourself the considerable setup time with this ready to use chisel. The style is Tataki Atsu, known as a firmer or framing chisel in the west. Sharpened at 30°, this style of chisel is designed for quickly chopping or hogging out material. Thick and durable, this is the workhorse for traditional timber frame carpenters. It can also be used for detailed cabinetry work. With a metal hoop to prevent splitting of the wood handle, it is meant to be hit with a genno or metal hammer. Being larger than the standard bench chisel (Ooire Nomi) it works quite well for paring as well as chopping - a jack of all trades.
