Description: This rare LP from RCA Victor (LM-1937, US pressing, plum shaded dog, mono) features pianist Jose Iturbi leading the Valencia Symphony Orchestra from the keyboard in Liszt’s Hungarian Fantasia, recorded in 1955 and among the great accounts of this work on LP. Filling out the disc are a number of solo selections from the Spanish repertoire: Manuel de Falla: 3 Dances from The Three Cornered Hat The Neighbors Miller’s Dance Final Dance Manuel Palau: March Burlesque Manuel Palau: Hommage à Debussy Joaquín Rodrigo: Homenaje a la Tempranica José Iturbi: Seguidillas Eduardo López Chavarri: Interior from Valencianos Nearly 60 years after these recordings were made, they have yet to see transfer to compact disc. Moreover, several of the selections offered here are still seldom heard either in concert or on record. Indeed, Iturbi's entire recorded output is very much deserving of systematic reissue and renewed appreciation on disc – outstanding! Iturbi plays with crystaline beauty and precision – William Kapell once called Iturbi "a wonderful pianist. The evenest playing I know". Very little of Iturbi's fairly sizeable discography has been trasnferred to CD, a great pity given his enormous talent. Incidentally, there are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Robert A. Hague, printed in English
