Description: What a fun item: an irresistible dog face, an intricate filigree design surrounding the individual months of 1908 and the legend of Towner's Mammoth Store in Monongahela, PA. These promotional items would have been made the year before used, i.e. 1907 manufacture for the 1908 Calendar. The National China Company would have retained a network of commission agents who would be assigned territory in some Mid-Western states and would then visit area merchants. They would have a sample book which would contain the calendar design(s), a number of designs which could be chosen for the middle (besides a dog, a cat was also offered in 1908) and then 3 lines of promotional text would be allocated to the merchant. The order would be made, paid for in advance by the merchant, a commission retained by the salesman, the item made by National China & delivered and then given away by the merchant as a premium to regular customers as the New Year began. The calendar plates with the name of the sponsoring merchant were very popular in the Mid-West in the decade or two prior to World War I. In our case, the National China Co. began in East Liverpool, Ohio in 1899. In 1910, the firm sold its East Liverpool facilities to the Harker Pottery Company, and purchased the Dresden China Company in Salineville, Ohio. National China operated successfully in Salineville for over 15 years, manufacturing dinner, toilet and hotel wares. In 1929, National China became one of eight firms to consolidate and form the American Chinaware Corporation.
