Description: Irish Volunteers 1 : Recollections & Documents, Hardcover by Martin, F. X. (EDT); O'Cuiv, Eamon (FRW); O'Donnell, Ruan (INT); O' hAodha, Micheal (INT), ISBN 1908928255, ISBN-13 9781908928252, Like New Used, Free shipping in the US This collection of original documents was put together by Martin, a cleric who died in 2000, and it reflects the foundation and growth of the Irish Volunteers, a group that was put together to support the Allies in World War I. This was complicated by the fact that the Allies included the hated British, and joining or serving was dicey because it could mean that you supported the British re-taking Ireland. The documents closely track the Volunteers in 1913 and 1914, including the rise of Carsonism in July of 1913, the decisions made at the provisional meeting at the rotunda in November of 1913, gun running, the committee of Eoin MacNeill and Pádraig Pearse, arming the O'Rahilly, the national army foundation and manifesto, the first lists, instructions for the forming of units, flags, hassles, volunteers' declaration of their policy, and the fateful decision to join the British and fight the Great War. This revised edition has a new foreword by Éamon Ó Cuív and a new Introduction by Ruán O'Donnell and Mícheál Ó hAodha. The original foreword is by Éamon de Valera.
