Description: World Airways, Inc. was organized in 1948 with authority to conduct worldwide supplemental air transportation only. Initial service was between New York and Puerto Rico. Prior to December 1, 1978, the effective date of the Airline Deregulation Act, World Airways had engaged in supplemental passenger, cargo and military air transportation services in the United States and overseas. On October 17, 1983, World Airlines added Kansas City, Missouri to its system via separate extensions linking that city with Baltimore, Maryland; Newark, New Jersey; and Los Angeles and Oakland, California. Covers sent to the Kansas City Post Office for dispatch to all points were cacheted and properly postmarked, but a labeling error resulted in their being entered in the mailstream and returned directly to collectors without having been dispatched on the inaugural flight. This cover was cacheted and postmarked for the inaugural World Airways flight from Kansas City, Missouri to Los Angeles, California.World ended all of its scheduled services on September 15, 1986 as part of an overall economic policy. It dismissed 57 percent of its staff and reverted to a charter and aircraft maintenance operator.
