Description: Indian War Small Medicine or Utility Bottle (Fort Pembina) Description: This is one of several items recovered from the Fort Pembina privies. Fort Pembina was located just west of the Red River and was built to watch over the Sioux and to ensure the safety of those living along the Red River. The fort was completed in 1870/71 and caught on fire in 1895. Some of the troops assisted in suppressing a Fenian Raid into Canada. The privies were full of items dating from the Civil War up through the late Indian War era. This is a very nice small size medicinal, or utility bottle recovered from the privies. This example is made of clear glass. It has a flat base with seams on opposite sides that run from the base to the mouth. There is also a seam just below the shoulder that runs around the entire side of the bottle. The mouth of the bottle is rolled outward creating a smooth lip. This bottle would date to the last 10-15 of the fort's existence. A very nice example from an Indian War privy!
