Description: 18TH CENTURY ANTIQUE MAHOGANY FEDERAL PERIOD DROP LEAF PEMBROKE TABLE W/ TWO DRAWERS - CT RIVER VALLEY / WESTERN MAThank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients. With our highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques is immensely proud to offer for sale this exceptional 18th century antique cherry drop leaf pembroke table. This piece is such a rare Connecticut River Valley table that we were struggling to find another example in our large research library for comparison. We own every major reference book produced over the last century on the subject and frequently revisit these old friends as scarce regional New England furniture is our first love and passion. We are overdue for another visit to Historic Deerfield; they truly have an awe inspiring CT River Valley collection. Item # HD 69.0315 is a closely related table but we believe this one is superior in every way. The table has an elongated scalloped top with a drawer on each end. The presence of drawers to either side is in itself a tremendously rare feature to find on any colonial era furnishing. Typically the term sofa table is ascribed to these formed tables as the elongated narrow form is the perfect companion to place behind a sofa situated closer to the center of a room. Sofa tables are rare in and of themselves however a pembroke formed sofa table is nearly impossible to find from this era. We hesitate to even use the term as many furniture collectors believe the traditional sofa table forms to be what is commonly found in England and the mid atlantic states produced in the first quarter of the 19th century which have drastically different characteristics. The drawers were constructed with New England White Pine secondaries & have an unusual set of hand cut dovetails that extend over the drawer sides. One of the drawers has a couple of age related splits in the panel but it still works as intended & we'd recommend leaving it original. We are always much happier to find the original panel in a drawer box rather than a replacement. The tapered legs are adorned with string inlay, and we’d like to point out that the cherry used for the legs is perfectly grain matched to mirror one another. The table has a solid cherry top and we love the long narrow leaves. The table retains its original iron hinges, and the leaves are supported by double shuttle supports that fold into the table box. The table is in the original finish and does not appear to have been cleaned or stripped of any of the original characteristics. Each of the brass pulls adorning the drawers are original and very unique to the field of early American furniture. The hardware alone warrants a discussion on what is known regarding documented revolutionary era brass forged objects. It is very likely that this table was constructed in the workshop of Eliphalet Chapin of Hartford County, CT around the township of Windsor during the Revolutionary War period. For those unfamiliar, the nearby house museum of Supreme Court justice Oliver Ellsworth houses one of the most unique collections in America related to this subject. We truly believe this offering to be a rare and unique opportunity for a collector to own an institutional level example while only investing a fraction of what a major New York City auction house would insist on charging. We thoroughly enjoy having ownership of this piece and will only be compelled to sell it to someone who will cherish it and safeguard its importance in the historical record of New England. The table measures 19” wide x 41 3/4” long x 28 3/4” tall. When the leaves are locked up the tabletop measures 35 1/2” wide x 41 3/4” long.
