Description: JACKANAPES by JULIANA HORATIA EWING illustrated by RANDOLPH CALDECOTT printed by EDMUND EVANS I am listing this in my illustrated books category because the attraction for me here has always been the work of Randolph Caldecott. In 1878, he began working with the wood engraver / printer, Edmund Evans, and together they revolutionized the world of children's books. Caldecott is best known for his series of picture books of classic nursery rhymes, but he also illustrated some novels by well-known Victorian authors. Mrs. Ewing was one of these; he illustrated this work in 1884. To my mind, this story is tediously moralistic and dated, but Caldecott's work is vibrant and delightful. This book was bought used, but is in good condition. Note: in this case, "good" factors in the book's age. If it were newer, I guess I would evaluate it as "acceptable". I take good care of my books in my smoke-free environment. Notes on condition: binding: decorated paper-over-boards with cloth spine; darkly discolored from aging; light to moderate rubbing along edges; spine heavily soiled interior pages: former owner's book plate adhered to front end paper; otherwise, clean; moderate to dark discoloration from aging; paper split along gutter between front and front free end papers, pages 32 and 33, and between back and back free end papers Please see photos to get a sense of the condition and lively visual content.
