Description: Ilex verticillata is a shrub in the Aquifoliaceae family. Its native range is from eastern Canada to the east and the central U.S. Other familiar names include Black Alder, Canada Holly, Coralberry, Fever Bush, Michigan Holly, Winterberry Holly, and Winterberry. An excellent addition to your winter garden. An easy to grow and has very few diseases or pests. It grows naturally in wetlands, dry dunes, and grasslands. The berries are eaten by many species of birds, especially the American Robin. It can grow to around 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide. The leaves do not have sharp teeth like many hollies. They are not evergreen but a purplish-green, eventually turning black and falling off. The white flowers are small and inconspicuous in bloom from April until July. Then the bright red berries come out in clusters throughout the Winter. It can grow in full sun, part shade, and full shade. It will average water needs with sandy, well-drained soil. Zones 4-9 Germination Place your seeds under a 2" layer of sand. Moisten the sand. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 90 days. This must be done for the seeds to germinate. Seeds can then be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep moist until germination.
