Buck O'Neil was a star in the Negro baseball leagues for many years, starting with a semipro team at the age of 12 and signing with the pros at 23. He was a veteran of some seven decades in professional baseball, and he achieved his greatest fame as perhaps the most remarkable voice from Ken Burns' acclaimed nine-part PBS series Baseball. As a first baseman, O’Neil played mostly for the Kansas City Monarchs on the Negro Leagues. In 1941 he met Satchel Paige, with whom he developed a close friendship. He became the Monarchs' playing manager in 1948. When black baseball folded because of post-Jackie Robinson integration, O’Neil became a scout for the Chicago Cubs in 1956, and then in 1962 he became the first black coach in 20th Century MLB history. He continued in various front office positions with the Cubs until 1988, and then he scouted for the Kansas City Royals well into his 80s. This autobiography is filled with delightful anecdotes, including an episode that resulted in Paige dubbing him "Nancy" and the period when he played with the Zulu Cannibal Giants, who increased their take at the gate by barnstorming in grass skirts. No fan of the sport should miss this volume, which is as entertaining as it is informative. Sadly, O’Neil passed away in 2006 at the age of 94. It’s a good bet that he was in Cooperstown in spirit just this past July, when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. There is only some very minor edge wear on the DJ, but this book is still in EXCELLENT condition. No collection of Buck O'Neil or Negro League baseball items is complete without this outstanding book. Check out the scan for the great photos of O'Neil on the cover.
