He has been praised and damned extravagantly as a writer of Gothic fiction. August Derleth refers to him always as "the late great H. P. Lovecraft", and many readers echo that sentiment. Derleth's viewpoint is perhaps partisan, for he was a friend and correspondent of Lovecraft's for many years, and is now the executor of his estate; Derleth's publishing house, Arkham House (a name derived from Lovecraft's fictional "Arkham"), was established primarily to print Lovecraft's writings."
