Description: These books were designed by a teacher/mother (M.Ed in Reading and Language Arts) who admired the work of Dr. Marie Montessori, an early educator who followed the philosophy of "let the child lead the way". She believed there were certain periods in a child's life when learning most easily takes place, when the child's interest and readiness motivates them to learn. Just as earlier is better for languages, learning does not necessarily take place on a schedule. The educator's responsibility is to provide the materials that evoke that learning experience. "Educare", the Latin word that means to "bring forth" is what education should aspire to do. Dr. Montessori believed that the right time and materials would draw out the learning for which the child was ready, thereby creating the excitement and joy that should accompany learning. With her philosophy and the rich environment she provided, even students with special needs were able to attain grade level achievement. This Series is created with those principles. As such, it is an almost self-taught approach requiring only a little help from the parent/teacher.The set of 3 board books and one "Play Book" contain a controlled vocabulary, so that only a few words are slowly introduced in each book. Those words are repeated in the next book with meaningful new words slowly introduced. Finally, in the "Playbook", games and activities reinforce the basic words that children see everyday and are familiar with in their world of experiences. They are appropriate for ages 2 1/2 - 5.
